FROM ZEN PHILOSOPHY TO MODERN EYEWEAR: MINAMOTO’S UNIQUE APPROACH

Minamoto is inspired by historical Japanese eyewear but also by traditional Japanese Zen philosophy. Our latest collection is a tribute to the essence of Zen, meticulously designed to embody authenticity, comfort, and minimalist beauty. Each pair of glasses is named after a meaningful Zen word, infusing our designs with a deeper sense of purpose and tranquillity, while honouring our Japanese heritage.

Understanding Zen: A Journey to Enlightenment

Zen Buddhism, originating in India and formalized in China as “Chan,” found unique expression in Japan during the 13th century, flourishing particularly among the samurai between the 14th and 16th centuries. At its core, Zen emphasizes “meditation” as a path to enlightenment through profound self-realization and transcending ordinary perceptions. Enlightenment in Zen represents a spiritual state of understanding existence, free from suffering and desire. Zen practice involves meditation techniques aimed at stilling the mind, allowing practitioners to experience each moment directly and live in the present with complete awareness. This heightened awareness encourages mindfulness of one’s surroundings and inner state, helping individuals turn off the mental autopilot that often governs daily life.

Our Collection: Capturing Zen in Eyewear

Our latest collection represents the timeless values of Zen philosophy: simplicity, minimalism, and mindfulness. Focusing on the true essence of eyewear – comfort, authenticity, high quality, and meticulous attention to detail. The collection features crafted frames from super light titanium and a titanium acetate combination, offering unparalleled comfort and a serene, relaxed feel. Each model is named after a Zen word, not just as a label, but as a reflection of the teachings and mindset integral to Japanese culture. These words serve as daily reminders to live with intention, presence, and awareness, mirroring the Zen practice of embracing the present moment with clarity and peace.

Zen Words: The Essence of Our Collection

The Zen words chosen for our collection are not just names; they encapsulate profound teachings that resonate with the spirit of Minamoto Eyewear.

KOJITSU (MN31024): “Nichi nichi kore kojitsu“

This phrase means “Every day is a good day.” It emphasises the importance of living with a generous heart and embracing positivity. In Zen practice, this concept is about recognising the irreplaceable value of each day, no matter the circumstances. Commonly used in chanoyu (the Japanese tea ceremony), this phrase is often displayed on scrolls in the tokonoma (alcove) to remind participants that a day is neither a good nor bad by itself – our attitude defines it. By embodying this principle, the KOJITSU model encourages wearers to approach each day with gratitude and an optimistic outlook, seeing the inherent goodness in everyday moments.

SHOUKO (MN31030): “ Kyakka shouko”

Translated as “Light your feet and look carefully” this phrase underscores the importance of self-reflection and awareness. In Zen, it is about understanding oneself deeply before making judgements about others. This practice fosters a spirit of introspection and careful observation, essential for mindful living. The SHOUKO models represents this deep – self-awareness and encourages wearers to engage in introspection, promoting a thoughtful and deliberate approach to life.

RYUSUI (MN31030): “Koun ryusui”

Meaning “Act naturally without attachment, like flowing with the tide” this phrase highlights adaptability and going with the flow. In Zen, this concept is about moving through life with ease and grace, without clinging to desires or to outcomes. Derived from the Zen phrase “Kou Un Ryu Sui” which means “floating with the tide,” it reflects the journey of an Unsui, a Zen student visiting masters. The RYUSUI model symbolises this effortless flow, encouraging wearers to embrace change and navigate life’s currents naturally and serenely.

CHISOKU (MN31026): Knowing that it’s enough. Appreciate what you have and understand your place, without desiring more than necessary.

BYOUJOU (MN31027): “Byoujoushin kore dou” – Live each day honestly and authentically, without getting caught up in superficial concerns.

DENSHIN (MN31028): “Ishin denshin” – Communicate from the heart and mind without words. Act with empathy and understanding towards others.

KYUNEN (MN31029): “Menpeki kyunen” – Patience and persistence are essential to achieving one’s goals.

SHOSHIN (MN31031): “Shoshin fukai” – To progress, return to the honest and flexible mindset you had at the beginning.

ICHIE (MN31032): “Ichigo Ichie” – Treat every encounter with sincerity, knowing it may never be repeated.

WAGANSE (MN31034): A smile costs nothing. Treat others with a smile, spreading happiness without expecting anything in return.
